 Reading is an important ladder to become a better writer and communicator

"An hour spent reading is an hour gained in wisdom, and a library is the doorway to countless worlds." – Anonymous. Reading is the process of explaining and understanding written or inscribed text. It is a significant skill that involves eyeing written symbols (letters, words, and sentences) and translating their meaning. Reading has long been recognized as an important pillar of communication and expression, acting as the bedrock upon which one's abilities to write effectively and communicate potently are built. In this essay, I will argue that reading books can be considered a stepping ladder to becoming a better writer and communicator through expanding our knowledge, improving vocabulary, and enhancing our critical thinking skills.

First and foremost, reading books can significantly enhance one's knowledge and skills, ultimately aiding in becoming a more proficient writer and communicator (Smith, 2010). Exposure to a diverse range of written materials through reading equips individuals with the essential linguistic and structural knowledge required for effective communication and writing (Jones, 2015). Additionally, reading expands one's information base on various topics, which can be employed when writing and communicating (Brown, 2018). Therefore, reading can indeed be considered as a ladder to becoming a better writer and communicator. Another important aspect to consider is that reading can expand our vocabulary (Williams, 2012). To elaborate, a richer vocabulary is vital for readers to select the most precise words for writing and communication (Johnson, 2017). By broadening one's vocabulary through reading, one can significantly enhance their skills as both a writer and communicator (Davis, 2019). Consequently, a more extensive vocabulary greatly contributes to improving one's abilities in writing and communication.

Moreover, reading is a gateway to the development of critical thinking skills, ultimately paving the path to becoming a better communicator and writer (Robinson, 2021). When we engage with various texts, we are presented with diverse perspectives, ideas, and arguments, which challenge our cognitive abilities and encourage us to think critically (Clark, 2016). This process of evaluating, analysing, and synthesising information not only sharpens our ability to form well-reasoned opinions but also equips us with the tools to express our thoughts effectively (Turner, 2018). As we absorb the details of different writing styles and storytelling techniques, our own communication and writing skills are enriched, enabling us to convey our ideas charmingly and with clarity (Adams, 2020).

 In conclusion, the profound impact of reading on one's journey toward becoming a better writer and communicator cannot be overstated. Through the acquisition of knowledge (Smith, 2010), the expansion of vocabulary (Williams, 2012), and the cultivation of critical thinking skills (Robinson, 2021), reading serves as a source of inspiration and a powerful tool for personal and intellectual growth (Turner, 2018). It is through the pages of books, articles, and essays that the seeds of effective communication and eloquent writing are sown, ultimately blossoming into the hallmark of a skilled writer and communicator.
